What is Visual Acuity?

Visual acuity (VA) commonly refers to the clarity of vision, but technically rates an examinee's ability to recognize small details with precision. Visual acuity is measured by your ability to identify letters or numbers on a standardized eye chart from a specific viewing distance.

·    Three major physical and neurological factors determine visual acuity

    o   the sharpness of the retinal image within the eye

    o   the health and functioning of the retina

    o   the sensitivity of the interpretative faculty of the brain.

Neural factors that limit acuity are located in the retina or the brain (or the pathway leading there). For example:

o   detached retina

o   macular degeneration

o   amblyopia (caused by the visual brain not having developed properly in early childhood)
